sweetpussyflaps:

This is a grave from the Victorian age when a fear of zombies and vampires was prevalent. The cage was intended to trap the undead just in case the corpse reanimated.

Kind of a fun explanation, but not very likely. It was to protect from grave robbers and (possibly) to also protect the grave stone from damage, although I could be wrong about the latter.

How to Lose Friends And Alienate People, a fictionalized conversation

  • Me (to a speaker who sends me his newsletter): Please remove me from your mailing list.
  • K.S.: That's insulting! Did you know I've been called 'the most important voice in the newspaper world'?
  • Me: No, why would they call you that?
  • K.S.: I was very big in the 90s, so of course that means I should be able to send you as much email as I want.
  • Me: How about you don't?
  • K.S.: Fine, but I'll have to think twice about ever coming to Canada to speak again because you've damaged my fragile ego.
  • Me: You were a very lonely child, weren't you?

Amuse me!

I am literally waiting for downloads to complete for serious work-like stuff, and I have nothing to amuse myself with but Tumblr in the meantime.

Monday, November 28, 2011

Back from a week in Mexico covering a jazz festival. I feel like I haven’t been on Tumblr in ages! So many things to post and mention, but that may have to wait until tomorrow.

Soooooo, what’s new?

Make Way For Turtles of the Day: Some 100 diamondback terrapins caused mild delays at JFK this morning after shutting down Runway 4 Left during their annual trek across the airstrip in search of “sandy spots to lay their eggs.”
“[T]here is an ideal location on the other side of Runway 4L,” said Port Authority spokesman John P. L. Kelly. “They come out of the water and cross the runway to lay their eggs in the sand.”
Wildlife specialists moved the turtles to “a part of the airport where they can keep traveling west, but in a safe direction,” according to assistant state director for New York wildlife service Allen Gosser.
Naturally, it was only a matter of time before the turtles took to Twitter to react to the brouhaha surrounding their ritual:

Meanwhile, Jellyfish in Scotland shut down a nuclear power plant.

I won’t lie - I have a huge soft spot in my heart for turtles. My family and I rescued one as a kid, which I kept until it could be released, so I think that’s part of it, but A’Tuin left a mark as well.

Tomorrow should be interesting.

I’ve got the screening for X-Men: First Class first thing in the morning, then I’m going to be on a Canadian (almost) national roundtable entertainment talk show (which I’m more than a little nervous about), and then I’m at a big party/event for the fall television season.

That sounds awful glamorous, now that I re-read it, but of course this is naturally not a normal day for me. I’m excited to be on TV, of course, but I think the highlight of the day might be the X-Men screening.

The drinks at the party will be very welcome though.

I’ll tell you, if I had the money this year, I would have gone to at least one of the final launches. Very disappointed I’m not going to be there at the last one, and missed this one.

Funny fact of the day. A few years ago I created this design for a joke and posted it on CafePress and yet occasionally I get a sale once a year or two to remind me it’s still there. That’s when I think: hey, I should do something with this, and then I move on and forget about it for another few months.
